3 ways that Pilates are good for you

Pilates was developed by German-born Joseph Pilates — yes, there really was someone named “Pilates”! Originally defined as “Contrology,” the Pilates approach to fitness centers around a body mind approach to movement. It focuses on body awareness, posture, and ease of movement as well as core strengthening and whole body fitness.

The benefits are Pilates exercise are many, but 3 of the main reasons to do Pilates are:

  1. Concentration — Pilates is a coordination of your mind, body and, according to Joseph Pilates, your spirit. In Pilates, concentration means performing your exercises as correctly as possible; focusing on the muscles to be stretched, the alignment of your body, your breathing pattern.
  2. Control — Pilates exercises help you to get control of your body mechanics. In other words, it teaches you how to move your whole body instead of working on isolated groups of muscles. As your skill level increases and you have a greater level of muscle control, you’ll make fewer errors while improving your alignment, balance and coordination.
  3. Balance — Pilates exercises condition the whole body so that all your muscles are evenly balanced and conditioned. Pilates helps to retrain your body so that your movements are more efficient and safer. This is very important if you’re recovering from an injury, want to improve athletic performance or for improving your overall health.
