Become a certified Pilates trainer

Becoming a certified Pilates trainer

Becoming a Pilates instructor requires more than just a good working knowledge and experience with Pilates exercises and equipment. It requires more than being physically fit. A good Pilates trainer has to have great communication skills, a desire to teach and help others, a compassionate nature, and most of all, a lot of energy!

In general, to become an instructor requires courses for certification from an approved provider. In the San Diego area, Propel Pilates and Fitness is a hosting site for Pilates Sport Center (PSC) teacher training. PSC began offering Pilates instruction with the focus being on fitness and low back care in 2000.

Over the years, the program has grown and PSC has added a Pilates teacher training program which is now available at Propel Pilates and Fitness. PSC’s program specializes in both “Classical” and “West Coast” Pilates and is a recognized nationally as well as internationally.

Teaching you to teach others

As a Pilates instructor, your goal is to improve the lives of others by working to improve their physical health through Pilates. Pilates is a mind-body approach to physical fitness which focuses on posture, body awareness, controlled movement, and core strengthening to achieve whole body fitness.

Pilates was developed by German-born immigrant, Joseph Pilates, who began to develop a system of physical rehabilitation while he was treating wounded soldiers in WWI. He called his original system “Contrology” – exercises to control muscles and the core ( the muscles around your spine and abdomen), and they involved a series of mat exercises. Today, Pilates can be done as mat exercises or on specialized equipment that use springs to change the workload.

Since Joseph Pilates first developed his exercise methods back at the turn of the century, Pilates has become one of the most popular exercise programs in the United States as well in Europe and other parts of the world. Not only is it recognized for its fitness benefits, but also for its role in improving a variety of medical conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, scoliosis, MS, and fibromyalgia, to name a few.

If you’re interested in getting certified to become a Pilates teacher at Propel Pilates and Fitness, the PSC pre-requisites include:

  • 30 + documented hours of Pilates instruction with a qualified instructor
  • a completed application and deposit
  • personal liability insurance if you’re practicing at your host studio
